What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as artificial roots for replacement teeth. They provide a strong, stable foundation for crowns, bridges, or dentures, mimicking the look, feel, and function of natural teeth.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Missing teeth can affect your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently. Dental implants offer a long-lasting solution by:

  • Preserving jawbone health and preventing bone loss
  • Restoring chewing ability and speech clarity
  • Providing a natural appearance and comfortable fit
  • Avoiding damage to adjacent teeth (unlike traditional bridges)

The Dental Implant Procedure: Step-by-Step

  1. Initial Consultation and Assessment
Your journey begins with a thorough dental exam, including X-rays or 3D imaging to evaluate jawbone density and determine implant suitability. If needed, procedures like bone grafting or sinus lifts may be recommended to prepare your jawbone for implant placement136.
  2. Implant Placement Surgery
Under local anesthesia (with sedation options available), a small incision is made in the gum to expose the jawbone. A precise hole is drilled, and the titanium implant post is inserted into the bone. The gum tissue is then stitched back, sometimes with a healing cap placed on the implant to protect it during healing.
  3. Osseointegration and Healing
Over the next 3 to 6 months, the jawbone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration, anchoring it securely. During this time, a temporary denture or crown may be provided for aesthetics and function.
  4. Abutment Placement
Once osseointegration is complete, a minor procedure exposes the implant to attach an abutment—the connector piece for the final crown. The gum is allowed to heal around the abutment.
  5. Crown Placement
Finally, a custom-made dental crown is attached to the abutment, restoring your tooth’s appearance and function. Your new tooth will blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort may occur but can be managed with pain medication.
  • Good oral hygiene and follow-up visits are essential for healing and long-term success.
  • Most patients resume normal activities shortly after surgery.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Durable and long-lasting tooth replacement
  • Prevents bone loss and maintains facial structure
  • No impact on neighboring teeth
  • Improves oral health and self-confidence
